Custom command for gzip won't work

Hi,

*Newbie alert*

I tried to create the custom command "gzip %1", but this command is never understood when executed. When I telnet in, the command works fine. The only things I can figure out are that either the server won't process a gzip command for an FTP session, or else gzip is becoming GZIP when it is sent to the server. GZIP won't work even in a telnet session, and the message that I am seeing is that GZIP filename is not understood. Any solutions for this?
