how to get rid of the index.php?

I uploaded my site to the server, I got the message that the transfer was complete. But I now keep getting the message that I have to remove the "index.php" . The host told me the I had to do that with my ftp programm, but how?????

I know, I'm probably the worst kind of newbie (a "digibeet" in dutch) in town! I got my files transferred, and the placeholder is gone, but now I got this site in stead of my website:

I have no idea what this is, or how to get rid of it, any idea's? What the hell did I do wrong?I had to fill in my password, but nothing happened after that. (only the words "icon" and "lang" appeared)

thank you very very very much! It is online now (not completly working, but I'll figure that out too) One day I'll really get to know computer stuff!
(right now I'll stick to designing clothes, I'm better at that!, so if you need help with some new troussers or so, just let me know!).
