FTP Program beginner. Questions about security.

Post by mr.boss »

Hello all. I have been searching for a good and free ftp program, and now I have found core ftp, which seems to be a great piece of software. However I’m new to ftp programs. I know how to connect to servers and such, but now I have some questions. All which are related to security.

First of all how secure is it to use ftp programs like core ftp? As opposed to use for instance the online file manager that hostgator.com offers?

I NEVER want to give anyone access to my server, where my precious sites and files are located. If I connect to my server now, is it possible for some computer savvy person to access my server? I have tried to choose “AUTH SSL”, “AUTH TLS, or “SSL Direct”, when I connect to my server, as well as SSH/SFTP, but none of these have worked for me.
I usually just connect to my server using username and password, with only “PASV” activated. Is this unsafe?

When I tried to use “AUTH SSL”, I got this message:
”AUTH SSL
500 This security scheme is not implemented “
As I said I have my server at hostgator.com, anyone have the same, and have some security advice to give me maybe?

In general I want to be sure that only I will have access to my server and files when transferred. What should I do then?
(Sorry English is not my first language)

Thanks for all replies.
