click to open folders on remote host

I'm connecting to my remote host....i can see my local and remote folders, I can click and browse up and down through the folders on my local server but when I attempt to do the same on my remote server nothing happens. The only way i can move up or drill down through these folders is to right-click, choose "change directory" and type the name of the directory I want to move to. Am I missing something? Sorry if this is a dupe question, I've attempted to search through the threads but can't find this addressed. Moving around the remote folders is the reason I'm using a GUI based utility, if I wanted to cd around the directories I would use command line. Thanks in advance.
